What Martial Arts Use Weapons

Popular styles of weapons martial arts are Kendo, Iaido, Jodo, Arnis, as well as many other styles of martial arts!

The soft or internal styles of martial arts — often Chinese — teach long and detailed practice patterns (often referred to as forms, or kata).  Some styles add weapons to their open-hand or unarmed martial arts forms to compliment the technical depth.

Harder or external styles of martial arts — often Japanese — tend to teach shorter, specific, concentrated, and repetitive forms. Unarmed forms often are separate from weapons practice and cannot be mixed.

Many weapons forms do not emphasize or contain what are traditionally understood of as “blocks,” but employ body position shifts, weapon redirection, or management of combative distance to defend the martial arts practitioner.
