Why is Aikido called the “Art of Peace”?
This question is best answered by other martial artists more qualified than myself, but I’ll give it a go!
To me, Aikido is a martial art about being in full control of yourself: your movements; your body; your movements. To do this, you must be at peace with whatever happens; not seeking to “win” or”compete” against others, not trying to “force” a movement, and not chasing after this or that technique.
As you become more practiced in applying aikido martial arts movement mechanics in response to attacks you become free from worry about what the attacker might do or is doing. You are free from the influence of the attack and the attacker, your response to attack is independent and free from the manipulations and intentions of the attacker. In short, your martial arts responses to an attack emanate from a position of independence, balance, and power. This position is experienced as a peace that exists complete within your control and wholly outside the influence of any attackers.
